Alianna's mother is an avid reader and she can attribute a lot of her passion for books to her. As a child, Alianna was read to often; many of her childhood memories are centered around books. As she has gotten older, Alianna has had a difficult time balancing her social life, school work, and reading for pleasure. She enjoys reading in her free time, but is often preoccupied. Her free time is generally spent at the library studying or spending time with friends and family. However, when she is able to read for pleasure, Alianna finishes her books with enthusiasm. She is always looking for new books to expand her literary competency. Lately Alianna has been diving into poetry and classic authors such as Shakespeare, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Whitman. She enjoys these authors because she is attracted to articulate writers who can capture the essence of her thoughts in words that she herself cannot find. Her growth as a reader has had many ups and downs throughout the past few years. Much like a child, there are growth spurts followed by periods with little to no visible growth. As a reader, Alianna is competent but lazy. She prefers excerpts from books as opposed to the entire thing. However, when she finds a book that can hold her attention for long enough, she devours every word.
Alianna learned to write with the help of many amazing teachers. One unique writing experience she had was working one on one with an English professor from Central Michigan University. While learning writing from this professor, Alianna experienced a lot of growth as a writer. Alianna thinks that people write to express thoughts and ideas, to report scientific and social findings, and to convey academic concepts. She finds that people learn to write by what they read. Writers tend to emulate the authors that have inspired them. In order to write well, Alianna thinks that people have to have the ability to express their thoughts and ideas in articulate and aestheticly pleasing words. She enjoys writing essays that communicate complex ideas. Alianna decides what to write about by looking at the facts and concepts that she thinks that she can express accurately. She feels that she hasn't had the opportunity to write anything that she is passionate about, but looks forward to exploring her writing more.
